Newborn Oral Care: Our Mini Sproutz™ Dental Program

The primary objective of Mini Sproutz is to familiarize families with the importance of newborn oral care. Your child sees their pediatrician from birth for multiple wellness visits and checkups — monitoring length, weight, and overall growth to make sure they’re on track for proper physical development in infancy. But who is checking inside their mouth?

The structures in a child’s mouth help them breathe, sleep, eat, and swallow properly — all basic life functions a child should be able to do without a struggle. So why is nobody evaluating a child’s mouth from birth to age three? So much growth and change happens during these years that baby oral care is just as important as the physical check-ups. At Inspire Dental Wellness, we feel it’s worth seeing an infant dentist as early as possible to help guide the growth and development of the mouth from a young age.

Our Solution to Newborn Oral Care

We developed Mini Sproutz as a 9-session program to help support healthy growth in and around the mouth. We can only offer guidance if we’re able to see these children, screen them, understand their needs, and build an action plan together. When you prioritize oral hygiene for newborns, you help set your child up for healthier teeth and gums through childhood.

When Should Your Baby See a Dentist?

Your child’s first smile is a moment you never forget. Mini Sproutz supports newborn oral care and health check-ins over the first three years of life. From a prenatal check-in all the way until age three — when your child transitions into regular dental care — the program uses its 9 sessions to support you at each stage as your baby develops and grows.

  • Prenatal
  • Birth
  • 3 months
  • 6 months
  • 9 months
  • 1 year
  • 1.5 years
  • 2 years
  • 2.5 years

Each phase checks in on developmental milestones and assesses growth and any concerns in your child’s oral health and wellbeing.

The Six Sproutz Stepz to a Solid Oral-Health Foundation

The Six Sproutz Stepz evaluate six areas of newborn development:

  • Breathing
  • Oral posture
  • Body posture
  • Dental development
  • Nutrition
  • Sleep

Together, these support open airways for breathing and sleeping, room in the jaws for incoming baby and adult teeth, and healthy movement of the tongue and other oral structures for feeding and swallowing. We’ll guide you step by step with practical, at-home approaches, and our infant-dentist wellness visits check in at each stage. Every child deserves a strong foundation from birth — Mini Sproutz helps fill the gap in checking the mouth at the crucial points, and offering support where it’s needed.

The Nine Sessions, Stage by Stage

Rootz

Prenatal · Session 1

What to expect when your mini sprout arrives, and how to start on the right path for the whole family — because mama’s mouth makes a difference for baby’s mouth. Our first appointment begins before baby is born.

  • What we recommend for morning sickness to help protect your teeth
  • Building a feeding plan before baby arrives — breastfeeding or bottle feeding
  • How to choose a bottle nipple that supports oral development

Seedz

0–6 months · Sessions 2 & 3

Two visits with your mini — one in the first few weeks (looking at oral-motor ability and how to care for the mouth even before teeth), and one around three months (getting ready for teeth as they start to come in).

  • Which pacifier may suit your baby, and why
  • Signs that may suggest a lip or tongue tie
  • Why open-mouth breathing matters, and how to help
  • Teething-toy options and early tooth care
  • Introducing feeding utensils

Budz

6–12 months · Sessions 4 & 5

We check in every few months as your child grows — around the 6- and 9-month markers. The introduction of solid food raises a lot of questions, and we’re here to guide you through the transition.

  • Baby-led weaning and introducing solids in a developmentally sound way
  • Why chewing solids (over purees) matters at this age
  • Gently weaning from the pacifier
  • Supporting oral-motor skills and hand/mouth coordination
  • How different cups and straws can affect jaw growth
  • Full-body movement that connects to oral development

Sproutz

1–2 years · Sessions 6 & 7

At the first birthday and 1.5-year mark, we talk through the transition from baby to on-the-go toddler — balancing their growing independence with the support they need to thrive.

  • How tummy time and sensory play still support oral development and feeding
  • Why snoring or loud breathing in a little one is worth paying attention to
  • Caring for toddler teeth as they come in, plus healthier snack choices
  • What to watch for with cavities or crowded, crooked baby teeth

Blossomz

2–3 years · Sessions 8 & 9

We check in at the second birthday and again six months later, as your child rolls into regular six-month dental visits. In these sessions:

  • How breathing can support mood and regulation
  • Why early assessment of teeth and jaw growth matters
  • The single most helpful thing you can do for oral development
  • How to get your child ready for their first dental visit
  • Fun, easy ways to engage your child with mouth movements
  • What nighttime bedwetting in a daytime-trained child can be connected to
